Candy coloured houses

Candy coloured cottages

At Easter I was rummaging around in my photo files when I came across these lovely candy coloured cottages in Tenby. We visited the lovely Welsh seaside town with the other half’s family in Easter last year and I’d never gotten around to posting any photos (despite the best intentions). The pastel shades make me want to paint my nails the colour of candy floss. I also now want to live in a pale pink cottage.

A birthday in Stockholm

We recently spent four nights in Stockholm to celebrate the Mr’s birthday. He’d wanted to visit for ages, and I must admit, I’m a complete convert now. If it wasn’t for the freezing cold dark winters*, I think I could live there.

We stayed in a studio apartment we hired from City Living Apt. It’s full of stylish Stockholm accommodation available for short term rent.  We opted to stay in an apartment so we could eat at home (as Sweden is ridiculously expensive to eat and drink out). But more on that next time, as I have a million photos of our cute accommodation to share next time.

Despite sleet, torrential rain and very cold winds we wandered the streets (and bridges and islands) of Stockholm through the gloom with a long list of places to visit. If you’re looking for a guide to Stockholm I recommend taking a look at these ones on Emmas DesignBlogg and Design *Sponge. With these guides printed, guidebooks at the ready and umbrellas up we spent several lovely days wandering around finding lots of cute and cosy spots.

So many of the buildings are painted a golden-yellow or terracotta. Warm and sunny colours to ward away the wintery gloom.

Taking a stroll around one of the islands.

Everything is so aesthetically pleasing. Even the Stockholm hire bikes beat the pants off Boris’ blue numbers.

The sea.

The old town.

Some of my favourite spots:

Fotografiska – the photography museum (as shown in the gloom above) is housed in a listed Art Nouveau industrial building. We were literally soaked by the time we found it but leaving our brollys and coats drying in the coat area we explored the massive space, which has several exhibitions on at any one time. We were lucky enough to see the dream-like pics of Helena Blomqvist and behind the scenes Godfather photos by Steve Schapiro. Well worth the entry fee.

The super stylish Urban Deli was just a five-minute walk from where we stayed in Sofo. The only bar, seafood restaurant and grocery all in one that I’ve ever heard of. We found having a drink at the bar then buying some yummy fresh food to take back to the apartment made up for not going out for dinner. Oh and they have a juice bar too. (There’s a completely vegetarian store just around the corner too).

Clothing and vintage furniture Grandpa is just around the corner from Deli and worth a look, although it’s bit on the expensive side.

We had an amazing afternoon tea at design store Svenskt Tenn.  Amazing furniture, fabrics, wallpapers, and gifts all designed with bright colors and bold patterns. As this already photo heavy, I’ll save more on this for next time.

Venice Beach – beer and nutters.

Venice Beach is weird. Everyone wants to sell you pot. It’s more beautiful than I ever imagined and it’s full of maniacs. I loved it. We stayed one night en route to New Zealand.  Next time I hope to explore Los Angeles properly, check out downtown and go celebrity spotting.  If you do visit Venice Beach I recommend the Venice Ale House for delicious beers and lunch or dinner.  I had a mean raw vegan salad and the other half rated his steak excellent. Just look out for the drunk redheaded American of Irish decent wearing a dodgy leather jacket. He’ll insult Jews, the Welsh and anyone who is listening. All while you try and eat your lunch in the sunshine on the boardwalk.

Ahhhh – just look at those blue skies.

Hibernation.

Santa kindly gave me a cold for Christmas. I’ve had it ever since and it seems to be getting worse, not better. And this morning, after two days in bed I woke up with an eye infection to top it off. A runny nose, dry cough and bung eye does not equal glamour in my books.  Fortunately I have some lovely plates on the wall and Columbia Road roses courtesy of the Mr to cheer me up from my sick bed.

I hope to be back at work and back in the land of the living tomorrow. x

Always room for one more cake stand.

My big sister arrives for a visit next week.  All the way from New Zealand. This a very small selection of her very large collection of vintage depression glass cake stands. Obviously collecting stuff runs in the family.

I know we’ll be doing lots of shopping, eating and drinking cocktails.  There’ll be many visits to the V&A (where she worked for a little while) and Liberty for afternoon tea.  And I may have found a junk shop with a bit of a collection of cake stands just like these… how many do you think she might fit in her hand luggage back home?

See you soon Sarah. x

Monday blues

Like everyone else I hate Mondays. Loathe them. Tired, grumpy, meh. Weekend over, work blah. Heart’s really not in it. Luckily I am surrounded by nice things to cheer me up a bit.

1. Lovely blooms from Columbia Road Sunday flower markets. Ahhhh, lilacs and peonies – loooooovely.

2.  Shelves full of shoes, books and tea cups…

3. And finally my Spongebob ukulele. No, I can’t play it. Nor have I really tried. But still it’s a nice prop. You can read more about my uke here.

Now it’s time for hula hoop class. That should make me much jollier. And by the time I get home it will almost be Tuesday. Even better.
