So last night I was lucky enough to go the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at London’s Leceister Square. Needless to say I was exceptionally excited, as I am a fan of the books and films and couldn’t wait to see the stars in the flesh.
The red was foaming from all the rain (literally) but the fans were there in their thousands and it was all a very surreal experience. The question of course was what to wear and I still didn’t know 20 minutes before I left. Red velvet or black floral and lace? It was bucketing with rain anyway so in the end I threw on the floral and black lace Topshop frock with my witchy boots from New York and a warm black coat.
Emma Watson, Clemence Posey and J.K. Rowling all looked glamorous in lace. Very fitting for a film essentially about witches and wizards. Rowling was almost channelling Stevie Nicks circa 1985 but it was Watson, the fashion world’s favourite young actress who stole the show in her extremely short, feathered Rafael Lopez for vintage store Atelier Mayer dress. Oh to have her legs.
The film itself was terrifying and I can’t believe I have to wait to see the final film and second half of the Deathly Hallows. At one point I jumped about ten feet in the air and booted the chair in front of me a bit too hard (sorry dude sitting in front of me).
But the highlight of the evening for me was seeing Tim Burton and Helena Bonham-Carter in the flesh , with their children in tow. They were leaving the theatre at the same time as us, coming down the stairs from the circle (along with J.K. Rowling) where all the big-wigs sit.
I just love the way she looked. As my colleague said to me today when I was telling her about the evening, “Okay I know you like Helena but she looks a mess! And what’s going on with the hair?”
Yes, a mess perhaps but a beautiful mess with poppies in her hair and a purple Vivienne Westwood frock. I’d be quite happy to look as half a beautiful mess.
If I was lucky enough to choose between all their amazing gowns however, I’d choose Clemence Posey’s Chanel dress. Very vintage, very gorgeous and very me.
